What is the lockdrop in Edgeware?

I am new to Edgeware and I keep hearing about the lockdrop. Can someone explain what it is and how it works? Also, what are the benefits of participating in the lockdrop? Thank you in advance for your help!

The lockdrop was a method used by Edgeware during its launch to distribute tokens. Participants could stake Ethereum (ETH) and receive EDG tokens, which granted them the ability to stake and vote on the new chain.
